Anyone destroying Tara river must be halted

After the Network for Affirmation of NGO Sector, MANS, announced that the Bar-Boljare motorway construction and building of bridges Tara 1 and 2 change the Tara river flow, the question is whether this really is the truth and is the Tara river going to be removed from UNESCO’s World Heritage List?

Here’s the position of the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs in this regard:

“Regardless of the scope and technical complexity of the motorway construction, the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs has a clear position towards the Contractor as well as the Supervisory body which must comply with prescribed regulations, standards and rules. Any act in breach of valid regulations, that might cause adverse effects on the environment, shall lead to sanctions. Being strongly committed to preservation and development of the environment, we express our firm conviction that all construction works will be responsibly implemented, in accordance with the rules and good international practice and standards. The Bar-Boljare motorway project is in the interest of all citizens of Montenegro, and represents a stimulus to development of Montenegrin economy and the country as a whole.”

The Ministry made a point of being clear about the environment protection in the context of infrastructural projects by stating that this issue has always been treated with special attention, and the same applies when it comes to the construction of the priority motorway section (Smokovac-Mateševo).

As for the media hype about the impact of the motorway construction works on the Tara river, the Ministry stated: “Apart from the construction of Bar-Boljare motorway (Smokovac-Mateševo section), there’s another project taking place there, referring to the river Tara flow regulation, which doesn’t fall under our competency, i.e. the Ministry of Transport doesn’t have the relevant information about it.”
