Bešlin: Serbian church is the generator of instability

There cannot be the confirmation of Montenegrin statehood until the question of church is finally resolved, warns Milivoj Bešlin, the historian.

The reason why the issue of completeness of Ukrainian Orthodox Church faces such strong resistance of Russian and Serbian Orthodox Church is that it will instigate the question of the independence of Macedonian Orthodox Church and, finally, of Montenegrin, says Bešlin.

According to him, orthodox churches are national churches at the same time but in our region that means they are in the function of nationalistic ideologies.

“And that’s heresy”, says Bešlin.

He commented on the political, religious, media and financial power of the Serbian Orthodox Church and said that political activity of it is very controversial.

“SOC is a generator of instability in Montenegro, it’s a political “umbrella” for numerous extreme groups. It is bearer of destructive Russian influence, factor of corruption in economic sense”, says Bešlin.

“Attempting to support one religious community would be very bad for Montenegro inherits anti-fascism, secularism, it represents civil society and it should remain so”, explains Bešlin.
