Mr Bogdanović reminded that this year marked four decades since severe earthquake in Montenegro and highlighted the role UNESCO had in the process of recovery.

“Forty years ago, a terrible earthquake hit Montenegrin coast. At least 101 people dies and cultural heritage suffered substantial damage. This horrific event reminds us of touching moments of solidarity, assistance and empathy, as well as of UNESCO’s help. That earthquake directed public attention to Natural and cultural and historical heritage of Kotor”, said Mr Bogdanović.

Mr Bogdanović stressed that global solidarity should be key in fight against consequences of conflicts and poverty, particularly emphasizing support and role of UNESCO in addressing global challenges.

“I believe that solidarity Montenegro felt 40 years go should be applied today in other countries, where nations are faced with migration, poverty and terrible living conditions. I’d like to remind you that world and national material and non-material heritage is jeopardized and, therefore, I invite UNESCO to help us create conditions for recovering from consequences. I firmly believe that current Organization reform will be a return to the essence and to common values UNESCO was founded on”, said Mr Bogdanović.
