Citizens shall not suffer consequences of the adventures of the new government

Andrija Popović

It is obvious that there is no essential deal between parties which will form the new government, as so far, they have only agreed on things they can’t have an impact on. I just hope citizens of Montenegro won’t suffer consequences of their adventures and lack of experience, sys in the interview with Dnevne novine Mr Andrija Popović, president of Liberal Party.

Commenting on the current affairs on Montenegrin political stage, Mr Popović says that there obviously can’t be any essential agreement among parties in this alliance.

“I believe this is the best they can do. As always, we are ready to offer the best solutions for Montenegro’s future development”, Mr Popović says.

Asked if it would be justified if DF got the power proportionate to the results in the elections, Mr Popović says that his party can never support a nationalist, right-wing and clerical-fundamentalist option.

“Therefore, we don’t support requests of DF. DF has completely denuded populist rhetoric of URA which has been claiming that their expert government will control the part of the new majority. But the new majority doesn’t seem to care a lot about what URA has to say”, Mr Popović says.

That was proven at the first municipal session in Budva.

“DF doesn’t need URA anymore. They way to the Saint Sava Budva is completely open and the same scenario awaits Montenegro”, Mr Popović says.

Mr Popović commented on the recent statement made by historian Aleksandar Raković who said that there would be over 40% of Serbs in Montenegro next year. Asked about the consequences of such result of the census, Mr Popović said that they had been warning about that part of the hegemonic policy for years.

“While understanding the need for democratic consolidation and reforms of Montenegrin society, we must also take care of vital national interests, one of which is consolidation of Montenegrin civil identity who has been on the impact of different state projects for a century. Unfortunately, seems that our fears were justified to a certain extent”, Mr Popović says.

He denounces claims of Mr Raković as “frivolous theses of marginal people and self-proclaimed caretakers who don’t wish well to anyone”.

“First of all, they don’t know Montenegro and its people and complex relations and tight connection among citizens. No Raković can mud the waters that much. Bosniaks and Muslims are like Albanians and Croats, Serbs and Montenegrins, are the pillar of civil Montenegro”, Mr Popović says.

Those who spread hatred speech will end up on the margins of history

Asked to comment on the fact that Cetinje is called “town of Ustashe”, Mr Popović says that it’s an old matrix liberals are used to.

“They use the same old recipe in Montenegro. But that recipe taught as a lesson. They will be subject to sanctions for hate speech and will end up on the margins of the most shameful history in this region”, Mr Popović said.
