Đukanović at the DPS Congress: We have to suppress any questioning of Montenegrin identity

President of Montenegro and leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, Mr Milo Đukanović, said today at the DPS Congress that a stable, harmonious and developed state represents the top priority, that Montenegro has an obligation to restore the Montenegrin Orthodox Church, CPC, and repress any questioning of the Montenegrin identity. Mr Đukanović warned that there has been a latent attempt in the region to revive ideas of the 1990s. He made a point of being clear that social progress has been a priority of the responsible state policy, and that Montenegro’s been firmly resolved to become part of the European system of values.

“Our primary interest is to strengthen the national identity of Montenegro. The DPS understand the needs of all the national communities. We must suppress any questioning of Montenegrin identity. We have an obligation to renew the CPC,” he noted.

Mr Đukanović continued: “In 1999, we refused to enter the war with the strongest military Alliance on the planet. If only we had opted for a different scenario, NATO and the EU would have been so far today, if there would be Montenegro at all. That’s why we ensured a democratic referendum and gained independence. We became a member of NATO and we are steadily moving towards the EU.”

According to President Đukanović, Montenegro today is more than ever on its own, steadily heading to the emancipation and development.

He reminded of the fact that Montenegro today is also a leader in the EU integration process, being firmly resolved to become part of the European system of values.

“In October 2016 we won a landslide victory, and then our victory in the presidential election confirmed the path we were taking. Over the past four and a half years, we eyed a dynamic economic development. We are implementing a number of capital projects. In our country, average salaries and pensions are on the rise.”

Montenegro strives to reach the developed Europe, said Mr Đukanović.

“Our vision of the Europeanization of Montenegro is still our priority. Our strategic goal is the EU membership. First of all, our goal is to reach a European quality of life. We will continue to be a factor of stability in the region. Today, more than ever, investment in education and science is of utmost importance. Along with the investment in human resources, this is crucial for the economy. We create the conditions for Montenegro to be a society of knowledge.“

“One of the most important issues is the environmental protection to which we are truly committed. Anyone willing to assist us is welcome,” President Đukanović concluded.
