Đukanović: Montenegro is able to address its problems

Montenegro is able to address its own problems in the spirit of the best European democratic practice, respecting the acquis communautaire. We don’t make problems, said Montenegro’s president, Mr Milo Đukanović, after informal dinner with heads of the EU and WB held in Brussels.

Mr Đukanović pointed out that Montenegro had proven to be able to resolve its problems. He reminded that Montenegro had had enough strength in the 1990s to resist the challenges of national and religious conflicts.

It’s true that Montenegro doesn’t always have cooperation with neighbors, president adds.

“The problem Montenegro is currently faced with is not exclusively Montenegrin. I see it in much wider context”, Mr Đukanović said.

President stressed that there was a struggle between policy representing European future and policy which wants to conserve the present state and keep the Balkans outside European rails.

“We must not underestimate the fact that deep down at the core of our societies there are layers of that consciousness and that we must handle that in a responsible and careful way”, Mr Đukanović said.

Asked to comment on the communication he had with Mr Aleksandar Vučić, Mr Đukanovič said they had discussed EU-WB topic and tried not to put the issue of internal affairs into the focus.

The meeting was important

In Mr Đukanović’s opinion, the meeting in Brussels conveyed a strong message about the commitment to the WB region and European perspective.

“The meeting was the opportunity for me to express Montenegro’s view on the current EU-WB relations. I stressed that the new institutional framework was very important for the quality and tempo of development policy of our region and that the EU should be focused on helping WB to improve transport, energy and digital infrastructure in order to provide high-quality EU-WB connection, leading to increased interest of private investors in the businesses and creation of new jobs”, Mr Đukanović concluded.
