Fun fact: We spend €1.2m a day on food imports

The latest figures show Montenegro importers brought in €425m worth foreign food and animals in 2017, that is, the actual amount spent on these foreign foodstuffs was as much as €1.2m every single day.

This means every consumer in our country spends nearly €700/month on imported food and €2 a day (or to be even more precise €1.88), according to the analysis of KOD.

“If only we spent just 1 euro on a product Montenegro produced, we would save more than €225m,” KOD’s analysis shows.

We must change this situation because now it doesn’t even help if you want to buy domestic food as there’s nowhere you can buy it, KOD has signaled.

Also, director of the Consumer Protection Center, CEZAP, Olga Nikčević, says Montenegrin favorites on the supermarket shelves are shipped from abroad and that we should not be shipping in so many spuds. In her opinion, domestic products are far better than the imported ones.

“People often buy low-quality food just because they have money. There’s a problem of free market as well, as anyone can import enormous amount of goods regardless of their quality,” concluded Nikčević.
