Government provides assistance in dealing with taxi transport problems

Professional Taxi Drivers Trade Union of Montenegro, headed by its president, Mr Borislav Pavlović, and supported by the Secretary General of the Union of Free Trade Unions, Mr Srđa Keković, met with the Prime Minister, Mr Duško Marković to discuss next steps in addressing the problems in auto-taxi transport.

Mr Pavlović said for Dnevne novine that they had made the analysis of the situation and it had been concluded that very little had been done in the elimination of grey economy and the taxi transport mayhem. However, with Government’s support, he added, they would continue to undertake activities aimed at tackling this problem.

“We’ve decided what to do next. The Government will be working on reducing grey economy. Inspection services will engage too. Amendments to the new law are expected soon”, Mr Pavlović said.

According to him, this is the first Government that has done at least something in order to solve this problem.

“Everybody agrees we are right, and yet not much has been done. We started addressing all 13 items (identified problems) earlier, but they are still pending”, pointed out Mr Pavlović.

Taxi Drivers Union proposed earlier abolition of the jurisdiction of Municipal Police in the control of passengers transport, as taxi drivers think the negligence of competent municipal services is the main culprit of the chaos. Mr Pavlović reiterates that local administrations fail to respect the rights of local drivers.

“Podgorica should have 1,300 employees in taxi transport. Currently, there are less than 400. That’s’ obviously negligence of competent services in Podgorica”, said Mr Pavlović.

Next week, Taxi Drivers Union will hold a meeting of the executive board to consider the next steps and try to find solution through negotiations.
