Is Montenegro’s security sector compromised?

Zgrada Ministarstva odbrane

Major of the Army of Montenegro, Mr Radule Čović, whom Mr Aleksandar Šaranović, the acting director of the Intelligence and Security Sector, has named as his close collaborator, used to be involved in the criminal court case on suspicion of misusing office in the Army while being in NATO headquarters in Poland.

Mr Čović was suspected of copying NATO documents to USB while he was in Poland. The Alliance’s system discovered it after which the case was immediately reported to the Ministry of Defense. He was urgently withdrawn from NATO headquarters and was on trial for espionage.

Following the announcement that Mr Aleksandar Šaranović is the new acting director of the Intelligence and Security Sector, OBD, in the Ministry of Defense and that he named majors Ivica Simonović and Radule Čović as his collaborators, the SDP MP, Mr Raško Konjević, strongly reacted and suggested the Government to order security checks of both.

Mr Konjević also asked Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Dritan Abazović, and the Ministry of Defense to declare whether it’s true.

But, he got the answer from Mr Savo Kentera, the President of the Atlantic Council.

“Not only it’s true, but it’s just a small part of truth. With current appointments in the military service, we may freely say that Russia completely took control of Montenegro’s security sector! Well done @AmbRusME, @KremlinRussia_E,” Mr Kentera tweeted.
