“Komarnica” hydro power plant won’t endanger Šavnik and Nevidio Canyon

Construction of “Komarnica” hydro power plant will not endanger Nevidio Canyon of Municipality of Šavnik, said Ms Dragana Čenić, secretary of state in the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism.

She said in the Parliament yesterday that “there are no facilities, households or infrastructure that could be drowned with the construction of “Komarnica” hydro power plant”.

“The accumulation is multi-purpose and is expected to provide integral development scenario of the region in the territories of Šavnik and Plužine”, Ms Čenić said.

The future hydro power plant will have 170 MW of installed capacity and 213 GW of annual production.

Ms Čenić explained that estimates and comparisons had been made for four different quotas of normal deceleration and seven technical dams.

“Technical variant which encompasses construction of concrete thin dam 171 meters high, plant with three aggregates and drainage tunnel and normal deceleration quota of 811 meters has singled out as the most favorable technical solution. This quota will not endanger the canyon or Šavnik”, Ms Čenić said.

DPS member, Mr Predrag Sekulić, said that Nevidio Canyon “has to be preserved”.

The plant is estimated to cost almost €250 million. The construction will take from five to seven years.

Mr Sekulić thinks that “Komarnica” hydro power plant should be built by Electric Power Company of Montenegro with partner company.

Mr Boris Mugoša, DPS member, pointed out that “it is particularly important now that EPCG is state-owned”.

He added that Montenegro would get considerable energy capacity by construction of “Komarnica” and reconstruction of “Piva” and “Perućica” hydro power plants.

Mr Branko Radulović, member of DF, agrees that “Komarnica” project should be carried out.

Member of the Socialist People’s Party, Mr Srđan Milić, says that “Komarnica” can’t be built by private-public partnership principle, because optimal use of water accumulation of “Komarnica” and “Piva” plants can’t be provided. He told ecologists to wait.

The ides of constructing “Komarnica” hydro power plant is over half a century old, reminds Ms Sanja Pavićević, DPS member.

“Komarnica” can be a very good solution for the generation of more energy. Its value would be even more important as it would connect to the 400 KV transmission line Pljevlja-Lastva which is then easily linked to Montenegro-Italy energy cable”, Ms Pavićević said.

Her party counterpart, Ms Nada Drobnjak, says that this energy project will have positive impact on creation of better living conditions and that it will stop migrations.

DPS member, Ms Daliborka Pejović, warned that we were far away from using all renewable energy potentials.

Mr Aleksandra Damjanović, independent MP, said that energy sector was a strategic resource where no mistakes could be allowed.
