Metropolitanate wants the law to be amended

Montenegro’s Prime Minister, Mr Duško Marković, and representatives of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral and other dioceses of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro headed by Metropolitan Amfilohije discussed the Law on Freedom of Religion today.

The meeting was concluded in the spirit of mutual understanding. Both sides agreed that the conversation was constructive and open.

“Both sides expressed their views on the issues related to the Law. Church sticks to its view that the Law is in contravention of the Constitution and international standards. The Government thinks that the Law can be applied as a modern law, harmonized with the Constitution and European standards”, Government representatives said.

Representatives of the Episcopal council submitted proposal for the amendments to the Law.

“The Government acknowledged this initiative and said that response required comprehensive consideration of the Law and other possibilities legal system offered. It was agreed that talks should be resumed at expert level”, Government said.

This was the first meeting held on the initiative of the Prime Minister concerning this Law. PM called the Metropolitan on the dialogue on 28 January.

On 3 February, Mr Amfilohije said he was ready to meet with PM.
