Montenegro celebrates Statehood Day

Montenegro is celebrating Statehood Day today, in memory of July 13th, 1878, when it was recognized as an independent country at the Berlin Congress. The same day, in 1941, the popular anti-fascist uprising sparked. This uprising led into the National liberation battle which brought the renewal independence.

President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, organized reception last night in Cetinje and he said that renewal of independence meant that Montenegro corrected both its own mistakes and mistakes of others.

“The uprising of July 13th traced the way of modern development of Montenegro and it gave hope to the enslaved Europe that fascism can be beaten. Erasing Montenegro from the world map in 1918, was a historical injustice, supported by the international community back then. But that was additional motive for the Montenegrin people to provoke anti-fascist uprising” ,said Đukanović.

President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Ivan Brajović, handed out the 13th July awards, the greatest national recognition of Montenegro, to Vukić Pelević, Krsto Andrijašević, Aleksa Asanović and Adnan Čirgić.
