Montenegro: Electricity generated from garbage by the end of the year

Podgorica and Montenegro are set to get the first power plant powered by biogas. Electricity will be generated from waste. If everything goes according to plan, first MW of electricity generated from garbage can be expected by the end of the year, Anadolija agency reports.

The project is being implemented by city company Deponija that deals with waste processing in Podgorica. Director Arsenije Boljevic said that waste represents potential and not a problem.

“In line with the policies of the Capital City and Deponije livade d.o.o, we see the waste as potential and not a problem, which is why we are implementing this project. Within our landfill we have a tub that we have been exploiting for the past ten years. I can say that our money now goes into the air, methane goes into the air, we have a torch that burns methane into CO2”, Boljevic said.

According to him, this project is important in two points.

“One is ecological, the other financial. Ecological is even more important, because the way things are now, we are creating greenhouse effect, because CO2 goes into air after burning. Financially, this project will benefit our society”, Boljevic said.

Deponija is one of the best organized companies in Podgorica. Over 150 work there. They deal with construction, usage and maintenance of landfills for waste, recycling of metal and non-metal waste and remains.

This project will be implemented in partnership with a company chosen on tender.

“This is a model of private-public partnership. As a city, we give the gas that is created from waste, which is the biggest investment in this case, and we are giving land to use for construction of the plant, as well as technical and economic studies. Priate partner is obliged to cover the existing tub and build the power plant”, Boljevic said.

The public call for partner will be published soon, and documentation is ready.

“Commission was formed to monitor this business, and they are in the process of drafting the documents. We have the agreement of the Parliament, Public call draft, and Contract draft, as well as technical and economic studies”, Boljevic said.

Value of the project 2 million EUR

“This project will not be funded from Deponija, which is important to us, that we don’t have to invest money and possibly take credits. The project will cost 2 million EUR by our estimates, which will be covered by a private partner”, he said.

Energy from solar panels

This type of ecological project has not been done in Montenegro so far, while a similar project was implemented in Slovenia. Aside from biogas, Deponija plans to establish solar panels as well.

“We respect Government’s policies and try to contribute to sustainable development and create energy from renewable sources. The plan is to create electricity from solar panels as well. We have 7.000 square meters available”, Boljevic said.

“I hope that the construction will be completed this year”, Boljevic said.
