Montenegro introduces voluntary military service

Vojska Crne Gore

Montenegro is going to introduce voluntary military service in 2019, the Ministry of Defense told Pobjeda, a daily.

“The long-term defense development plan 2016-2015, adopted by the Government of Montenegro, envisages introduction of the voluntary military service as one of the priority development goals. We also need to amend the related legislation in order to create conditions for this kind of military service.”

Having in mind the capacities of the Army of Montenegro, that is, the Training Center, the Ministry currently plans to train 100 soldiers per year.

“There’s a possibility to increase the number of soldiers in this 3-month training, in case we have more applicants than expected. The Ministry of Defense is obliged to provide legal framework and funds for the implementation of this project,” the Ministry explained.

Mandatory military service was abolished in 2006 after Montenegro restored its independence.
