Ministry of Justice of Montenegro has submitted petition to the Ministry of Justice of Serbia for the extradition of Svetozar Marović in order for him to serve his prison sentence.
As it has been reported from the Ministry of Justice, before the petition had been submitted, international Red notice was just enough for Marović’s arrest in Serbia so that he can be extradited to Montenegro, just like in other cases.
“However, the fact that in the last two years Marović has been walking freely in the public places at the territory of Serbia made the Ministry of Justice of Montenegro submit the petition for his extradition. We expect that this petition will encourage competent authorities of Serbia to fulfill their international duties”, said the representatives of the Ministry of Justice.
In addition, the Ministry has requested that Marović’s son Miloš serves his prison sentence in Serbia.
“By force of law, Miloš Marović lost his Montenegrin citizenship and he was granted Serbian citizenship. According to the international agreements in force, Serbia is not obliged to extradite its own citizen who has been convicted to a prison sentence that lasts less than 2 years”, said the representatives of the Ministry.
Svetozar and Miloš Marović have been noticed on many occasions in Belgrade but Serbian police failed to react every time.
“We find the decision on granting person convicted of organized crime Serbian citizenship very indicative, since that way, they enabled him to escape serving prison sentence in the country where he committed serious criminal offence”, said the representatives of the Ministry.
State authorities of Montenegro have used all the mechanisms of judicial police cooperation that resulted in the Interpol Red Notice.
“Despite the urging, state authorities of Serbia haven’t arrested Svetozar Marović and his son. Also, they failed to inform Montenegrin state authorities on the reasons for their omissions”, said the representatives of the Ministry of Justice.
