NATO mission in Iraq is open for every member and every partner and we would gladly welcome Montenegrin participation in this mission, said the official of the Alliance during the briefing at NATO headquarters, dedicated to this training mission. He added that the Alliance appreciated deeply the interest of Montenegro in the participation in the Iraq mission.

“We already have Australia, Finland and Sweden, Since we are in great relations with your state, we would welcome your participation”, said the Alliance official.

Minister of Defense, Predrag Bošković, said recently that Montenegro was interested in taking part in logistics positions at the airport in Baghdad, and added that one or two officers of the Armed Forces of Montenegro would take part that mission.

NATO official said that if Montenegro had already sent the letter of intent to join the operation in SHAPE, then it hadn’t reached the level of political decision-making procedure. But, the request is being considered.

“They have to assess if that would fill the gaps they have. If that’s not the case they will offer something else. If that is the case, they will contact Montenegro and nominate it for a potential partner in the operation”, explained the Alliance official.

The mission in Iraq has a non-fighting character. Its aim is to build technical abilities.

“The objective is to teach Iraqi instructors to learn to tech their own people so that they can create new instructors. When a part of the public is well trained, they can reproduce within the Iraqi forces and provide support to the Iraqi security institutions and forces in order to help building stable, sustainable, transparent, inclusive and efficient national security structure”, said the official.
