New MRI for children in Montenegro

KCCG

The new magnetic resonance device, worth over 500 thousand euros, was officially launched today at the Institute for Childhood Diseases (IBD).

Director of the Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG), Zorica Kovačević, said that this is important not only for this institution, but also the entire Montenegrin healthcare.

She recalled that 400 million euros for the purchase of the equipment was provided by Dr. Nicholas Alice with business partners from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and that the rest came  from the KCCG.

Kovačević said all Montenegrin children will benefit from the new MRI, adding that the old one was over ten years old, slow and inadequate.

“Around 4,000 children in Montenegro need an MRI every year. Our budget also allowed the purchase of an anesthetic device, which is necessary in diagnosing children with special needs, autism, small children”, Kovačević concluded.

Health Minister Kenan Hrapovic recalled about EUR 3.1 million was invested in the construction, adaptation and renovation of healthcare institutions last year, while almost 12 million were allocated for the purchase of new equipment.

Dr. Alice underlined the initiative for the purchase of the MRI device was launched by the leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists, Milo Djukanovic, during his visit to the UEA in September last year.

He said that this particular device exists nowhere in the surrounding countries.

Engineer Nenad Poleksic noted that this is the shortest magnet in the world, which is very significant as ten percent of claustophobic patients are examined every year.

He explained the magnet has no helium consumption, which means there will be no frequent interruptions in the operation of the device.

“With this device, the noise level was reduced by as much as 70%, and the KCCG also provided a specialized anesthesia device that can be used in such a strong magnetic field”, Mr. Poleksic reported and explained the new MRI would be functional within the next few days.
