Opposition is trying to overcome disunity for the 2020 elections

Opposition parties are discussing the way in which they should stand for the elections in 2020, whilst trying to channel the disunity in at least two lines.

Talks between DF and Socialist People’s Party and United Montenegro have been intensified, with the aim of creating a joint platform for the united action of these three political groups.

The second opposition line consists of parties and independent MPs, participants in the meeting organized by the president of Socialist Democratic Party (SDP), Ms Draginja Vuksanović Stanković. SDP members, Democrats, URA members, Demos and Montenegrin party would make up this group.

Both groups have troubles with reaching definite agreement, owing to some past events that some actors just can’t get over. After terrible experience with “Ključ” coalition, SDP has not recovered yet. Many SDP officials think that Socialist People’s Party should go independently.

President of this party, Mr Vladimir Joković, highlighted pros and cons of running independently.

“Advantages include maximum unity and engagement of all bodies and members, easier presentation of party’s program and goals, absence of clashes within coalition. The problem is the threat of great waste of votes, fight for the same electoral body and, of course, lack of financial funds for the campaign”, said Mr Joković.

Another problem is that some DF officials refuse to make coalition with the United Montenegro because it is headed by Mr Goran Danilović. Some think this problem has no solution in sight.

On the other side, “the other line” deals with many problems as well. Democrats, the strongest party that attended the meeting in SDP, prefer to run as independent party, with possibility of forming coalition with the Montenegrin party, which would lead to SDP, Demos and URA coalition.

It is obvious that united running of the opposition is impossible. Just like the “two groups” system .Four groups would be the most reasonable scheme.

Damjanović under pressure to form a party

Independent MP, Mr Aleksandar Damjanović, is under constant pressure to form a party. But for now, he hasn’t issued any official statement.

Data collected in February this year indicates that 55 parties have been registered in Montenegro. Formation of several new political subjects  has been announced.
