Opposition has a phobia of Djukanovic’s candidacy

The opposition shows the pathological fear of Djukanovic’s candidacy at the presidential elections, says Seki Radoncic, assessing that an opposition candidate has no fair chance to win.

While the ruling coalition, led by DPS, is scoring goals against the divided opposition, says Radoncic, its representatives are sitting on the bench arguing whether to run on the pitch together or individually.

If the opposition has a common candidate, Radoncic adds, it might be a more serious political game, but the chances for that are minimal.

“For example, if Becic is the candidate of the opposition, that will mean that Democratic Front (DF) has no true candidate. Therefore a large number of DF members would defect and join the Democrats. If the candidate is, for example, Ranko Krvokapic, a large number of DF and Democrats’ voters will abstain or will join another party, because they will not be able to make such a radical ideological and national turn,” he estimates.

If, however, the opposition leaders run into elections independently, they will counter a fiasco.

The opposition is also considering supporting a non-partisan candidate.

“It is not a secret that all the leaders of the opposition parties in Montenegro are well aware that the support to an independent candidate (especially if he/she comes from the sphere of influence of another party, or, from another political option) will reduce their influence and ultimately reduce their parties’ membership. As for the strong non-partisan figure in Montenegro, I do not see such a person at this moment. In the event that the opposition finds a non-party candidate acceptable to all its leaders, I think that he/she will be so politically pale that he/she will not have realistic chance to win. Particularly not against Djukanovic, who, in addition to the huge winning experience and personal charisma, has the strongest party infrastructure and traditional support of minority nations. And this is a virtually unattainable initial advantage,” he said.
