Opposition’s alliances and agreements just a dead letter

Over the past decades, the opposition in Montenegro has been striving to oust the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, by promising unity, signing agreements and making coalitions. The result is always the same – election beatings and political agreements meaning nothing.

The latest agreement is the so-called ‘Agreement on Future’, proposed by the organizers of the ‘Resist!’ movement and the opposition. It was signed in front of the crowd in the capital, Podgorica, pledging unity in the fight against the 30-year rule of Djukanovic and his ruling DPS.

What happened in the end: they had a fight over money and influence, and that is exactly how the opposition in Montenegro has been functioning since ever.

A part of the opposition also signed the Agreement ‘Da svako ima’ on 1 May 2019 in Bijelo Polje, while many people think the association that proposed it was established just for the needs of the forthcoming parliamentary elections. In case of the election beating, we can expect the same scenario as always – its members would probably split and that would come as no surprise.
