Plans afoot for another three bilingual classes of first-graders

Omer Mehmedović

Plans are afoot for another three bilingual classes of first-graders in elementary schools “Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša” in Budva, “Radomir Mitrović” in Berane and “Sutjeska” in Podgorica, Ministry of Education announced.

According to the Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr Omer Mehmedović, increasing bilingual classes indicates considerable interest for such type of lectures and says that such concept really has effects.

“If we start from the pre-school education, the first thing is introducing English language in kindergartens. English is taught two times per week. At first, children had doubts, which is pretty normal”, Mr Mehmedović said.

Strategic approach to this subject has led to similar solutions in elementary schools.

“Not only is English studied as subject since the first grade, but we also have 12 bilingual classes in elementary schools. Children work with trained teachers who went through training processes of the British council”, Mr Mehmedović points out.

The project of bilingual classes was initiated three years ago in “Mirko Srzentić” school in Petrovac, “Olga Golović” AND “Luka Simonović” in Nikšić and “Maksim Gorki” in Podgorica.

Institute for Education has visited these schools and analyzed two lessons. As report stated, the project was a very positive experience for the school, teachers, children and their parents.

After the project was completed, the program continued and was extended to another four schools.

“Teachers in bilingual classes go through a process of training, or a course. CLIL Essentials course is the basic course for conducting classes in English”, Mr Mehmedović says.

The content of the course has been designed in such a way that it is being conducted by trainer/moderator licensed by the British Council. Materials are used at Cambridge University and are specially created for CLIL program. The course consists of 20 modules, each taking around two and a half hours of intense work.
