Radulović: Enlargement won’t be in the focus as long as there are problems in the EU

Momčilo Radulović

The fact that only several hours before the expiration of the deadline for the appointment of EU chiefs the consensus over the candidates wasn’t reached, reflects the political political crisis which isn’t going to be settled with the EU chiefs election process, says the President of the European Movement in Montenegro, Mr Momčilo Radulović, while emphasizing that it’s illusory to expect that engagement is in the focus now when the EU is dealing with substantial and structural problems.

Mr Radulovićć pointed out that after this year’s way of electing the heads of the EU institutions, we were going to have far more insecure political practice which would probably result in different political combinations and that would cause additional political insecurity.

“So far, we have had practice that has been providing stability in the entire EU system. We have had respect for everything that had been defined in advance. It’s all gone. It can either be considered as development of democratic institutions or as political instability. I’m inclined to believe it’s a kind of political instability as nothing so far seemed to look like a stable, political communication but rather a very insecure, almost selfish, quite unsystematic political-party calculation with no strategic framework”, said Mr Radulović.

Commenting on Macron’s statement that “there’s no room for enlargement in the existing European structure” , Mr Radulović says that it came as no surprise. It’s not encouraging fro Montenegro or the region but, we have to keep doing our job.

“We can only hope that the surge of those crises will be over by the end of year or the beginning of the next one and that next year we might have a revitalization of the process. Unfortunately, that’s not for sure”, said Mr Radulović.

On Tuesday night, political leaders of the EU Member States finally reached an agreement on the names of the candidates who will be governing the Union for the coming five-year term. Ms Ursula Von Der Leyen is going to take over European Commission, Mr Charles Michel was picked by leaders to be the next European Council chief, and Mr Josep Borell, chief of Spanish diplomacy, was proposed to replace Federica Mogherini as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Ms Christine Lagarde was selected as President of European Central Bank.

Final decision on the EU chiefs will be rendered by the European parliament on 15 July.
