Representatives of public and political life strongly condemn the attack on the US Embassy and urge authorities to clarify all the circumstances that led to this incident.

President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic expresses regret over last night’s incident in which one person was killed by activating explosive devices near the Embassy of the United States of America in Podgorica.

The president is convinced that all the circumstances of this incident will be cleared up and that Montenegro will continue to promote the security of the diplomatic and consular missions and their staff with full commitment.

The Government of Montenegro strongly condemns the attack at the US Embassy.

Minister of the Interior Mevludin Nuhodzic and head of the Police Directorate Slavko Stojanovic visited the site and the US Embassy this morning. On that occasion, as well as in other contacts of Montenegrin officials with representatives of the USA, regrets regarding the attack and solidarity with the USA were expressed, and our strong position was emphasized that this event will not and cannot undermine the high level of safety and security of diplomatic missions or overall security situation in Montenegro. The competent authorities are making every effort to clarify this case.

Expert and security professor Darko Trifunovic told CdM that people who attack a foreign embassy thus send a political message.

“The investigation should determine whether there are elements of terrorism here or it is a case where a person felt isolated or acted in such a way under some other influence. If it is politically motivated violence, then, by definition, it’s a terrorist act. In this case, the attacker did not kill anyone, but the question is whether he wanted to send a political message to the country the embassy of which he attacked,” explains Trifunovic.

He adds that it is necessary to investigate the motive of the attack and whether the attacker made that decision himself or was under someone else’s influence.

Montenegrin political parties condemned today last night’s attack at the US Embassy. The Democrats, the Social Democrats, Forca, Liberal Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), URA Civic Movement, Bosniak Party (BS) and Socialist People’s Party (SNP) expressed their regret for the attack, but also invited the state institutions to react. They hope the authorities will bring the circumstances surrounding this case to light. URA adds that the worrying social and political situation in the country contributed to this attack.
