Roćen: Montenegro marching steadily towards its diaspora

Special envoy and adviser to the President of Montenegro, Milan Roćen, attended the third meeting of the Council for Cooperation with Emigrants and used the opportunity to say that cooperation with diaspora has become one of the topmost priorities of the executive and legislative power in Montenegro.

“Not so long time ago, citizens of Luxembourg used to leave their country, seeking for better life in Brazil. Nowadays Luxembourg is one of the wealthiest countries in Europe and many Montenegrins have found their home there. This topic has been elaborated in a novel New Brazil of a famous Luxembourg writer, Guy Helmiger. I want to believe the offspring of our emigrants will return to their roots,” said Roćen.

He explained his optimism has been underpinned by the fact that for 12 years since Montenegro restored its independence, our country has become one of the leading economies in the region, the latest NATO ally and a leader in negotiation talks with the European Union (EU).

“Montenegro is heading towards its diaspora, that is, to Europe. A newly established position towards the emigrants greatly contributes to our contemporary development. I’d hereby remind you of the first Cooperation Strategy with Diaspora, which was adopted in 2010, when I used to be a foreign minister. The Strategy envisaged establishing the Department for Diaspora, now being the part of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. We even got a new, amended Law on Cooperation with Diaspora several days ago,” Roćen emphasized proudly.
