Šćekić: EU doors will always be open for Montenegro

Jakša Šćekić

A journalist from Belgrade and editor of domestic and foreign media, Mr Jakša Šćekić, says that Montenegro is the closest country in the region to entering the EU. EU doors will always be open for Montenegro.

Commenting on the statements made by French president, Mr Emmanuel Macron, who said that there wouldn’t be enlargement, Mr Šćekić said that the EU was focused on itself now and had to resolve its internal problems.

“These problems are visible and reflected in political turmoil and resistance of sovereign parties. We have socialists on one side and sovereigns from the Višegrad group. The core of misunderstanding is the fact that consensus isn’t working. EU will have to define what decisions are going to be made by consensus and what decisions are going to be made by voting”, says Mr Šćekić.

He points out that it’s a long process and it might even take three years. EU candidate countries should keep doing what they had started.

“Macron’s statement must not discourage candidate countries. That’s the most deplorable policy. Montenegro, for example, must keep “pushing” the reforms and keeping heading towards the EU. The EU doors will be open for it. They will never reject you”, claims Mr Šćekić.

However, there’s always some sort of danger that euro-skeptics push the WB into the hands of Russia.

“Macron’s statement pleases Putin. But WB has to fight. It can make progress in the EU only. The EU won’t let it remain the black hole of Europe”, concludes Mr Šćekić.
