Scepticism of France demotivates candidate countries

Tanja Fajon

The European Union (EU) statements clearly saying that it’s not ready for further enlargement pretty much demotivate the member states, as the EU membership for the citizens of Montenegro and Serbia, as well as other candidate countries and potential candidates, represents a solemn promise for better future, Tanja Fajon, a member of the European Parliament told Pobjeda daily.

Commenting on the last week’s statements of France European Affairs Minister Natalie Loazo that the EU hasn’t been ready for further enlargements, Fajon noted: “Such statements surely demotivate the countries wishing to join the EU. The EU membership has been perceived as a solemn promise for better standard of living, safer background for enjoying human rights, better opportunities for the young, greater freedom of media and healthier democracy.”

On the other hand, what’s even more important than the exact date of entering the EU are real changes in a society. “Unfortunately, I don’t see anything’s happening in this context. We are witnesses of continuous citizens’ resentment resulting in mass protests in at least 3 states, including Montenegro.”

She added that it’s obvious the EU has been struggling with numerous challenges but the Western Balkans should remain its priority.
