Serbian media unleashed a storm of attacks on Đukanović again

Milo Đukanović

Fresh information has echoed across the region: “After 30 years, the government in Montenegro is falling apart?! Attacking  Serbian Orthodox Church was a terrible price for Milo to pay”.

This is just one of many headlines read in a part of Serbian media coming after Center for Democracy and Human  Rights (CEDEM) published the results of its latest research which showed Serbian Orthodox Church enjoyed the greatest trust of citizens, after education system. “Milo, that’s’ your poor fake church, surveys don’t lie, Montenegrin people believe in Serbian Orthodox Church”… screamed the headline of Informer tabloid.

CEDEM research has sparked off comments in Montenegro too as its results have aroused suspicion. This was a great moment for Serbia and Serbian media to convey a message that the rule of Mr Milo Đukanović is over now, while forgetting that trust in Serbian Orthodox Church  was considerably higher in December last year. Seems that they overlooked the fact that president Đukanović is still Montenegrin highest-ranking politician.

This time, Serbian clergy and their interests in Montenegro were the main focus of comments. And because of their interests, Serbian politicians and intellectuals keep warning Mr Đukanović and Montenegrin government about the consequences of the adoption of the Law on Freedom of Religion. Believers in Serbian Orthodox Church are ready to strenuously defend their holy places in Montenegro.

Political analyst, Mr Ranko Đonović, said recently that CEDEM research would be used for manipulations and spinning.

Mr Đonović thinks that this last research was an attempt to discourage Democratic Party of Socialists and warn it about the damage this religion issue might cause. Mr Đonović has no doubt that the campaign against Mr Đukanović and his government will be even more aggressive.

The determination of Montenegrin government to finally resolve this religion issue is the background to these attacks. It is shown through media interpretation of the research conducted by CEDEM.
