Shutting down TPP Pljevlja would leave 2,000 people jobless

The Ministry of Capital Investments is in continual negotiations with partners from the European Energy Community (EEC) to provide additional working hours for the thermal power plant under the current regime and expects a favorable outcome, the Daily Pobjeda was told from this government department.

On Monday, Minister Mr. Mladen Bojanić warned that the thermal power plant was under threat of being shut down, and on Wednesday he announced that it would not happen.

Former State Secretary for energy in the former Ministry of Economy, Mr. Nikola Vujović, believes that shutting down the TPP should not even be an option for anyone who is trying to address the energy sector seriously.

He warned that at this moment it would be catastrophic from the aspect of energy security and stability of the system, as well as from the aspect of economic activity in the country, and especially in Pljevlja.

“Shutting down the TPP also means shutting down the Coal Mine, which means closing 1,000 jobs in Pljevlja, which further implies closing as many more jobs related to the thermal energy complex in Pljevlja”, Mr. Vujović emphasized.

Unlike the representatives of the current and former executive power, in NGO Green Home, they believe that a positive response from the Energy Community is unlikely.

“The negotiations with the Energy Community began immediately after the new government took office, understanding the urgency and importance of this issue. We believe that our European partners understand the gravity of the situation, which was not affected by the wrong policy or failure to act by the new government, so we hope for a favorable outcome of negotiations”, said the Ministry of Capital Investments.

They reminded that by the agreement with the Energy Community from 2018, Montenegro accepted the obligation of ecological reconstruction of the TPP, by means of which the environmental pollution level would be reduced to comply with the European standards.
