Mr Joe Biden, who was elected today the 46th president of the United States of America, is a long-standing friend of Montenegro.

Over the past years, he demonstrated commitment to Montenegro on its Euro-Atlantic path and conducing foreign and internal policy, by emphasizing the importance of friendly relations between Montenegro and the United States. He sincerely advocated for Montenegro’s accession to NATO.

“I believe that it is in the interest of the Alliance, the United States and the region that the enlargement continues and that Montenegro becomes a NATO member”, Mr Biden told back in 2015.

The President-Elect met with Montenegro’s President, Mr Milo Đukanović, on several occasions. Their encounter in January 2010 in Washington was particularly important. At that time, Mr Biden was the US vice president, whereas Mr Đukanović was the prime minister.

Mr Biden, who’s well known for his great knowledge of the Balkan circumstances, talked back then to Mr Đukanović about the position of Montenegro both in the region and the world.

That year, Pobjeda daily was reporting that the Americans wanted to hear about President Đukanović’s views about the Balkans.

It’s interesting that in the end of that meeting, Mr Biden took off his shirt cuff buttons and gave them to Milo Đukanović as a gift.

In 2018, Montenegro awarded Mr Biden for his contribution to the promotion of Montenegrin interests, strengthening of interstate relations, the international reputation and position of Montenegro.
