There are many challenges before the region, says Popov

Aleksandar Popov

It’s obvious that Montenegro and Serbia progressed the most on the road to the European Union (EU), but there are many challenges before the region right now as the EU is too busy with itself, a co-president of the Regional Igman Initiative for Serbia, Mr Aleksandar Popov, told Dnevne Novine daily.

Speaking about the European perspective of the countries of the region after the European elections, he explained that the EU intention was to have Serbia and Montenegro as the full member states by 2025, but things have changed in the meantime.

“They had a plan – to have a European union. Migrant crisis changed everything and showed some things.”

Mr Popov continued: “There are many challenges before the region. The EU is keeping alive the hope that some countries would join it in due course. However, in my opinion, 2025 will come right away and I don’t think it’s realistic to expect to enter the EU by that year,” he emphasized.
