Tobacco excise taxes for funding treatment of rare diseases

Kenan Hrapović

Health minister Kenan Hrapović told Pobjeda daily his ministry has been preparing a document seeking for a way of directing a specific amount of money collected from excise taxes on tobacco products to the fund for treatment of rare diseases and expensive medicines.

We might expect opening of the first bank account during next year already, according to minister Hrapović.

He said: “The Ministry of Health as well as the Ministry of Finance discussed this issue in the govt. for several times, in order to find a model for transiting specific amount of money collected from tobacco excises to the fund for cure of rare diseases and expensive medicines. I think we are progressing well and next year we are to open a specific bank account for these purposes. We shall see how it’s going to work, as not everything depends on the Ministry of Health.”
