What would happen if Škrelja attacked a taxi driver?

Aivo Orav

European officials hold lectures on proper behavior, democracy and respect of human rights as core values of humanity almost every day. They have been doing this for years and they often state Montenegro might be prevented from entering the EU if only it ceased to respect these values. But sometimes their acts and claims are not “European” at all. Many people in Montenegro were terrified to learn about the reaction of the head of EU Delegation to Montenegro, Aivo Orav, who told the attack on Škrelja represented “the risk of his profession”.

The question is: what would Orav do or say if Škrelja attacked a taxi driver? Would he tell a taxi driver that the attack on him was just “a risk of the profession”?

Here’s how some members of Montenegrin political parties reacted on this whole situation…

The leader of the Liberal Party, Anrija Popović, told CdM he was unpleasantly surprised by Orav’s statement. He said: “Human rights and freedoms of all people and politicians as well are their natural rights and must be respected as such.”

Nikola Gegaj of the Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, clearly stated the parliamentary function is a very responsible job and people of different opinions often insult the MPs. “I myself feel insulted even though this is not about me. It’s even disgusting to comment.”

Gegaj didn’t want to elaborate on Orav’s statement, but simply noted: “What would happen if my colleague responded to a taxi driver? I believe that would be scandalous.”

Nikola Bajčetić of the Movement for Changes, PzP, sees this whole situation completely different. He said: “If Luiđ Škrelja’s safety has been endangered, what should we say for our leaders and officials who face such situations on a daily basis.”

The president of the Administrative Board, Luiđ Škrelja, received threats in Podgorica several days ago by an unidentified taxi driver, who cut into Škrelja’s way and told him “you should get hit by a car for everyone’s sake!”

This is not the first time Škrelja receives the death threats but the EU has never reacted.
