Davidović: Opening of EU borders to other European countries to be encouraged

Secretary of State in the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, Mr Damir Davidović, asked at today’s virtual meeting with UNWTO the World Tourist Organization to support European states that are not EU member states by encouraging opening of borders of the EU states towards them in order to try to reduce negative effects in the sector of tourism.

Mr Davidović presented activities that had been implemented in MNE so far and emphasized two packages of economic measures.

“Mr Davidović touched on the fact that Montenegro has opened its borders to a great number of countries on 2 June. He pointed out that we were guided by the degree of infection in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus”, Ministry says.

Secretary-General of UNWTO, Mr Zurab Pololikashivili, pointed out that the world was faced with unprecedented global health, social and economic emergency situation and that travelling and tourism were the worst affected sectors.

“Statistics show that COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically reduced international arrivals, recording a 44% decline at global level in the first four months of 2020”, he pointed out.

He mentioned three possible scenarios which envisaged the fall between 58% and 78% in international arrivals in 2020.

“Mr Pololikashvili concluded that security and safety were in the main focus of tourism. Regardless of the current moment, UNWTO encourages members to prepare for new investments”, Ministry said.
