Imposing a total moratorium is dangerous and unprecedented

Bankers were surprised to see that the parliamentary Economy Committee endorsed the proposal for the law on imposing a total half-year moratorium, as, according to them, that solution is dangerous and unprecedented, and the creation of an unpredictable legislative environment sends a wrong message to investors.

The law was proposed by the Social Democratic Party, and doesn’t envisage the payment of interest rate during the moratorium. This lex specialis was backed by the Democratic Front, the Movement for Changes and the Social People’s Party, while representatives of the Civic Movement URA and Democrats abstained because they wished to consult the Central Bank of Montenegro, CBM, and bankers first. MPs are to declare on the law afterwards.

CBM expressed their surprise over the position of the Committee, noting that both the public and decision-makers were not familiar with the analysis of its impact on Montenegro’s economy.
