The Minister of Justice, in the Government that lost confidence last summer, Marko Kovac, was enraged when on 11 November the High Court in Podgorica made a new decision and ordered that the former, long-time president of the Supreme Court, Vesna Medenica, continue the prosecution for the organized crime and corruption released pending trial. Medenica was accused of this crime by the Special Prosecutor’s Office.

He said that the “Supreme Court relatively recently” decided on the grounds for detention and that it had a different approach and determined that there were grounds for detention.

He added that he noticed a different treatment in relation to similar situations that happened before in terms of detention, as well as some other criminal acts of other members of criminal organizations.

“Certainly, this will be additionally analysed”, said Kovac.

The judicial authorities, as well as the Prosecutor’s Office, did not react to the obvious pressure of the outgoing Minister of Justice on the work of judges and prosecutors.

The Association of Judges and the Association of State Prosecutors are also silent. Numerous non-governmental organizations that deal with the work of the judiciary do not speak out either, and there are quite a few of them.

The Association of Judges and the Association of Lawyers refused to comment for Pobjeda on Kovac’s messages.

“His statement is pressure on the court and interference in the work of the Special State Prosecutor’s Office. He cannot say that he will look with the prosecutors as to why there are no grounds for detention”, an unnamed source from the judiciary has told Pobjeda.
