What will happen with the Sunday-off proposal is still unclear after the Employers Association sought the constitutional review of the decision. The Constitutional Court should make a move now.

Employers Federation of Montenegro has submitted the constitutional review initiative to the Constitutional Court. The constitutional review refers to Article 35a of the Law on Internal Trade stipulating that retail and wholesale trade shall not be conducted on Sunday and during state holidays.

The law was adopted in July. This article shall come into force on 15 October which means that the first Sunday off will be on 20 October.

Secretary General of the Union of Free Trade Unions, Mr Srđa Keković, said that the initiative launched by Montenegrin Employers Federation was a very bad move.

As Ministry of Economy reported earlier, around 37.000 people work in trade sector.

“With Sunday off, employers will be able to increase the productivity of work and reduce maintenance costs and regular services costs. This decision cannot reduce the number of employees. It’s just the right of the employees in trade to have one free day in the week, just like it is the case in other activities”, said the representatives of the Ministry of Economy.

Montenegro’s Prime Minister, Mr Duško Marković, said that this concept was good.

“We need to socialize our policy and make it more human. Chase for money and profit has destroyed our values”, said PM.
