Montenegro will continue to support sustainable development goals

Milo Đukanović

Montenegro continue to support transformation based on accelerating the implementation of goals and tasks of sustainable development, said President Milo Đukanović at the Summit on Sustainable Development Goals which is taking place in New York.

“Forum is another opportunity to express political will for the achievement of defined goals but also for sharing practical experiences. As findings of the secretary general indicate, absence of ambitious global response results in the fact that the most vulnerable categories feel the consequences of slow implementation of Agenda 2030 most”, said Mr Đukanović.

Mr Đukanović is certain that future activities must be planned with utmost care and that they should include continuous engagement of all interested subjects in generating new ideas for achieving the vision of sustainable development.

“Five dimensions of the Agenda continuously encourage innovative integration approaches and critical view on the challenges of today. In accordance with the transformation character of the Agenda, Montenegro is committed to implementing harmonized, integrated, long-term sustainable development measures”, said Mr Đukanović.

Montenegro’s president highlighted several entry points which the integration character of the sustainable development policy is based on.

“Within current reform of the sustainable development management system, we are reinforcing existing functions of the National council for sustainable development and we are establishing central, horizontally-positioned organization unit within public administration system. We believe that optimal mechanisms of exchange of national achievements data must be established so that global reports can reflect the objective state of affairs. I’d like to invite you to strengthen those exchange mechanisms. Accelerating achievement of goals should be based on integration character of the national policy of sustainable development”, pointed out Mr Đukanović.

Mr Đukanović explains that mutual connection of not less than five sustainable development goals was achieved when the individual strategic sustainable development measures were defined.

“Integration character of measures aimed at strengthening strategic commitment of Montenegro in the establishment of optimal development model based on sustainable value of total national resources is particularly important. This resulted in significant positive steps forward. Unfortunately, limited discussion doesn’t offer much space. However, I’d like to point out progress made in the domain of economic growth, increase in the share of renewable energy sources, continuous monitoring of poverty risks, education quality and so on”, concluded Mr Đukanović.
